SWIMMING

KIWI AMATEUR CLUB. The annual meeting of the Kiwi .Amateur Swimming Club was held last night. The president (Mr S. Brown) was chairTlie chairman referred to the death of Mr A. Thomas, who had been a staunch supporter and a vice-president bf the club. A, motion of condolence with the relatives was carried. - Moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the chairman said there were many pleasing features of the season to which he wished to refer. Among the most gratifying was the increase of the club membership to over the 200 mark. It was pleasing to the committee to find so many young folk coming. forward to learn to swim, and also the number of older people who attended the club hours, more with the idea of improving their swimming than of taking part, in competition. The .increase in membership had been due to the coaching carried out by the club and especially by Mies Maimie Boulton, the ladies’ captain, and Mr A, Findlay. It was a long time since the club had so many young swimmers coming forward. There was no need for him to repeat all the championship successes that had come the way of the members. Although no New Zealand. titles came to the club this season, R. Geddes was placed in the National 220 Yards Breaststroke, Mrs Isaacs in the Ladies’ Diving Championship, and P. Mathieson qualified for the National Backstroke final.' The chairman, after referring to the numerous activities of the club during the season, said the year had ended in a fairly substantia] loss, but ever since the balance sheet was draw up the position had improved. The ladies had given good service to the club. He, ref erred to Cyril Leeden’s plucky rescue. of a man from drowning at St. Kilda. Oh behalf of the club he extended a welcome hand to the members of the Shanahan family, who had already shown that they were a big asset to the club. He thanked W. Matthews for his coaching, and concluded by wishing the club a successful season. The motion was seconded by Mr A. Findlay and carried. The following office-bearers were elected: —Patron, Mr A.
