PENINSULA COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Peninsula County Council was held at Portobello yesterday, and was attended by the chairman (Cr H. Maeandrew) and Crs Cross, Stewart, Edpicnds, Irvine, Nyhon, Hellyer, Brunton and Robertson. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr J. Newton, Tomahawk, wrote complaining that the council’s workmen, while repairing a drain, had drestroyed a stretch of turf in front of his cottage. Moreover, the member for the riding had sat there on his horse and watched them do it.—Referred to the engineer. The clerk of the Wanganui County Council forwarded a copy of the following resolution, soliciting the council’s support: —“That this council considers that the Transport Board is not functioning in the best interests of the farming community in as much as its operation is creating a monopoly, with consequent increased costs, by eliminating competition in the carriage of goods to and from farms. It is considered that the payment of heavy traffic license fees, etc., by the owners of motor vehicles is sufficient to cover the use of any road subject to compliance with the road classifications or special local restrictions.” —Received. Messrs Baylee and Brunton, solicitors, Dunedin, wrote inquiring whether the council would reconsider its decision not to take over as a public road a right-of-way adjoining the properties of Messrs J. M; M'Ewan and J. Procter, “The Cove,” North East Harbour. —Held over in the meantime. The treasurer of the Change of Luck art union forward a cheque for £l9, which had been directed by the Minister of Internal Affairs to be used for the relief of distress generally at Portobcllo. —Received. Mrs R. Hastie, Christchurch, wrote requesting the council to consider making a road to the farm of her late father, Mr J. G. Dick, which extended from the Lower Harbour to Wickliffe Bay. They had been paying rates for 70 years and the original surveyed road was. still unmade.—The engineer was instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost of repairing the access road from Wickliffe Bay. A letter wab received from the secretary of the Otago Hospital Board complaining that the road in front of the board’s property at Broad Bay was in a bad state. He would be glad if the matter could be attended to at the council’s earliest convenience.—lt was decided to reply that the council did not consider that any improvement was required, Mr J. B. Thomson, Broad Bay, wrote stating that the Camp road in front of his property was in a very bad state, and he hoped the council could find a means of improving it permanently.— Referred to the chairman, the local members, and the engineer. A letter was received from Mr T. Anderson, Port Chalmers, who complained of a blockage in the culvert across the main road fronting his crib at Lower Portobdlo.T—Referred to the engineer. Mrs E. Addison, Waverley, wrote stating that as the result of a neighbour erecting a pump at her fence water was running on to her property. She also complained that owing to the formation of the road at her gate the drainage water was running on to her property. —lt was decided to reply that in the opinion of the council the writer had no cause for complaint. The secretary of the Tomahawk Domain Board wrote asking whether some, of the Tomahawk unemployed could bo used in the forming of paths to the Tomahawk Lagoon.—Rcferred to the engineer. Wright, Waverley, wrote requesting that tho road leading to their property should be repaired.—lt was decided to inform the writers that the road would be attended to shortly. A letter was: received from Mr P. L. Watson, Otakou, complaining of the state of the road at Wickliffe Bay between the .farms of Mr Stewart and Mr Clearwater. —Referred to the engineer for attention. Mr, T. M. Bali forwarded copies of the main highway allocations for the current year. Those affecting the Peninsula County were as follows:—DunedinPortobello high road, £I2OO (£3 for £1) j Dunedin-Portobelio-Otakou, £IOSO (free) and £6OO (£3 for £1); DunedinHighcliff, via Tomahawk, £6OO (£3 for £1) .—Received. RANGER’S REPORT. The ranger (Mr E. Campbell) reported having found 26 head of stock wandering on county roads during the month. — Received, ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer (Mr S. G. Paterson) reported as follows on the work done in the various ridings during the past month:—; Otago Heads Riding.—The work of improving Pipikariti road has been continued, a sharp bluff being cut to widen the bank immediately above. Slips caused by the recent heavy rains have been cleared from the main road, Portobello Riding.—Watertables have been cleaned on the main road, and several culverts relaid. Two slips which blocked the road were cleared. Several small slips on Kinnaird’s road have been cleared. Sandymount Riding.—Repairs have been made to a portion of the RiddellsHooper’s Inlet road, but the work has been discontinued temporarily. A small retaining wall has been built on the High road, where a slip had occurred. Highcliff Riding.—A small quantity of metal has been run out on Craigie’s road and on the Camp road. General maintenance work has been done on the Camp road. The reconditioning of the surface of the Main road lias been continued at the city end as far as the cafe. Watertable cleaning and general maintenance work has been done. Tomahawk Riding.—Clearing of slips and watertables has been done on Smaill’s road. Metal is being quarried for further repairs to riding roads. North East Harbour Riding.—Maintenance work has been done on the following. roads at Vauxhall: —Bnccleugh terrace, Shandon street. Larnach road, and Abbotsford road. Drains have been cut along portion of Princes street. Cosy Dell. Broad Bay Riding.—Watertables have been cleaned on Lusa road, Helensburgh Township, and on Wilson’s road. A slip has been cleared at the foot of the Camp road. One large culvert in Broad Bay township has been extended. The report was adopted.
