Medlin, who ha s been appointed manager of the optical depart"ment of Quins, Gore, will leave for the south to-day. Sergeant W. D. Thom, who has been transferred to Dunedin on promotion from Ormpndville, has commenced duty at the Central Police Station. - Sir Lindo Ferguson and Dr W. Rowlands, who will a meeting of the Medical Council in Wellington, left by express yesterday morning. They will return to Dunedin to-morrow. Mr R- M. Watson, S.M., Fielding, has been transferred to Napier to fill the vacancy caused by the recent retirement of Mr A. M. Mowlera, S.M. In accordance with the reorganisation of magistrate's districts the Hawke’s Bay circuit has been extended, and will in tuture include Daunevirke. _ . " The president of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce (Mr C. B. Barrowclough) left yesterday morning for Wellington to give evidence before the Parliamentary Mining Committee with respect to the proposed mining legislation. Mr F. W. Johnston (Christchurch) has been returned unopposed as president of the South Island (N.Z.) Motor Union. Nominations for the positions of the three vice-presidents are: Dr S. A. Gibbs (kelson), Messrs James Palliser (Timaru), M, Holmes (Oamaru). E. W. G. Watts (Dunedin), and J. R. Haigh (Invercargill). It was reported at yesterdays meeting of the South Otago Hospital Board that Dr S. T. Martin had that day tendered his resignation as house surgeon at the Balclutha Hospital, as he was proceeding abroad. Arrangements had been made for the position to be filled temporarily. Bishop Sprott. of Wellington, announces (says a Press Association telegram) the appointment of Canon James, vicar ot St. Paul’s Pro-Cathedral, to be vicargeneral of the Wellington diocese; Archdeacon Hansell to be Archdeacon of Wellington in succession to the late Archdeacon Johnson: and the Rev. W, Bullock, vicar of St. Peter’s, Wellington. _to be Archdeacon of Wuirarapa in succession to Archdeacon Hansell. . ' During the course of an address at the Wellington Rotary Club the Rev. W. Gilmour said (reports a Press association telegram) that in all probability “Ralph Connor,” the Canadian author, would arrive in New Zealand in March next. “Ralph Connor” is the Rev. Charles W, Gordon. D.D.. LL.D..
