GOLF IN AUSTRALIA

THE WOMEN’S FOURSOMES WON BY NEW ZEALANDERS (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.)

SYDNEY, August 31,

(Received August 31, at 11.30 p.m) Although they dropped five strokes compared with the morning round, the New Zealand players, Misses Oliver Kay and Bessie Gaisford, played well enough in the afternoon to win the Australian Women’s Foursome Championship at the Royal Sydney links. Fine rain fell dur ing the day and par . the course were under water.

In the morning round Miss Kay was hitting her woods well, but could not find touch on the greens. Miss Gaisford putted excellently. Missed short putts and visits to the rough produced two sevens in their afternoon round, but two birdies partly made up for those lapses. Miss Kernot and Mrs Bettington, who were only one stroke worse than the New Zealanders in the morning round, crashed badly in the afternoon, returning 99.

Miss Hammond and Mrs M‘Kay had an amazing eagle three at the 515-yard seventh hole. The former hit a great tee shot, Mrs M‘Kay following with an equally good second. Miss Hammond then holed out with a full mashie niblick.

The leaders’ scores were as follows: — Misses Kay and Gaisford, 82, 87 —RIO. Mrs T. S. M‘Kay and Miss J. Hammond (N.S.W.), 87, 85—172. Miss V. Ebert and Miss P. Sydney Jones (N.S.W.), 86, 86—172. Miss P. Nankivill and Miss B. Bailey, (Victoria), 87, 88—175. Mrs A. Russell and Miss C. Lascelles (Victoria), 87, 90 —177. The Handicap Foursomes, based on the first 18 holes of the Championship Foursomes, were won by Miss B. Kernoi (Geelong) and Mrs R. H. Bcttington (N.S.W.) with 83—6—77. Misses Kay and Gaisford were second with 82 —1 —Bl.
