Strong and gusty north-westerly winds blew throughout the day, reaching a velocity of 40 miles per hour. The weather was dull and threatening. The temperature at 4 p.m. was 53.9 degrees, the maximum for the day being 55.4 degrees. CHRISTCHURCH, August 31. The weather to-day was fine though cloudy. The morning was calm, and there was a light west-south-west breeze in the afternoon. The maximum temperature was 56 degrees. The barometer now registers 29.90 in and is rising.
