COMPETITIONS FESTIVAL

DEMONSTRATION CONCERTS _ Two demonstration concerts in connection with the annual festival of the Dunedin Competitions Society were presented yesterday, the attendances being fair in each case. Both programmes were exceedingly good entertainment, that offered in the evening, in particular, being worthy of better support than was accorded it. The evening programme was as follows:—Ballet, “Scotland’s Own,” Miss Lily Stevens’s School of Dancing; piano duo, “ Danse Macabre ” —Misses A. Kirk, M. Ironside, M. Runnerstrum, and N. Park; child’s action song, “My Crinoline,” Miss Pat Johnson; humorous recitation, “ Come and See, Master Bobby Whale; child’s action song, “Miss Milligan’s Girls,” Miss I. Montgomery; piano solo, “ The Sailor’s Dance,” Miss Clare 1. Neale; child’s action song, “The Apple Song," Miss Ethel Thomas;_ dialogue, “Peter Pan and Wendy,” Misses Joyce Rowley and Merle Swanson; character dance, Miss Irene Scott; piano duet, “Norwegian Dance,” Misses Zoe Knight and P. Johnson; mezzo-soprano solo, “O Thou Fields of Waving Corn,” Miss Margaret Beattie; step dance. Miss Ethel Todd; recitation, “Music Comes,” Miss Joy Knowles: humorous recitation, “The King’s Breakfast,” Miss Verna Thompson i vocal solo, “ O Pure and Tender Star of Eve,” Mr F. G. Taplin; half-hour entertainment (scene from “ Hippolytus ”), Dunedin Academy; piano solo, Mr C. G. H. Oliver; humorous recitation, “Nonchalant Nonsense,” Mr E. Moller; contralto solo, "Hark, What I Tell Thee,” Miss Angela Hendry; dance duo, “Game,” Misses Ngila Slowley and Lila Murdoch; violin sojo, “ The Shepherdess,” Miss Merle Wildey; recitation, “The Mad Son,” Miss Molly Baker; bass solo, “ Open Thy Gate,” Mr G. Proudfoot; character dance, Miss Daphne Morrison; piano solo, Miss Ruth Wcsney; recital, with accompaniment, “Mcnin Gate,” Mis 9 Lydia Henderson; vocal eolo, “Good-bye” (White Horse Inn), Mr W. Stevenson; recitation, “Home Thoughts of Lavantie,” Mias Lexie Mathieson; skipping rope dance, Mias Wilmur Thomson; recitation, “Fear,” Mr Norman West; vocal solo, “ Two Grenadiers,” Mr H. M. Brosnan. The afternoon programme was also composed of attractive items, the most outstanding' of which were the ballet, “A Wedding Eve Phantasy,” by pupils of Miss Lily Stevens’s School of Dancing, a children’s chorus by Miss Martyn’s juveniles, and a number of children’s action songs and duets. FINAL CONCERTS.

The final demonstration concert will be held at His Majesty’s Theatre this evening, commencing at 7.20 o’clock, when an interesting and varied programme will be presented. The programme will include Miss Lily Stevens’s spectacular ballet, “ Radio Land,” the half-hour entertainment by Miss Anita Winkel’s party, “ The Naughty Nineties,” and several of the most interesting items heard during the festival, including items by Miss Anne White, the ladies’ vocal scholarship winner; Mr F. G. Taplin, the gentlemen vocal scholarship winner; Miss Daphne Morrison, winner of the dancing championship;; Master W. Clarke, winner of Begg’s Scholarship; Miss Billie Robinson, winner of the Elocution Scholarship: Miss Molly Baker, who has won a nnmber of first prizes during the festival; Miss Maud Giles and others who have b n en to the fore, and many of the choicest juvenile items heard during the festival.

A special matinee has been arranged for this afternoon, and will include the half-hour entertainment, “In Fairyland,” by Miss Muriel Eagar’s punils. <lie spectacular ballet by the Otago School of Dancing. “One Aulunin Day.” the children’s chorus, “ Dolls for Sale,” by Miss N. Parker’s juniors, and an interesting programme of child's action songs, children’s duets, dances, piano solos, piano ducts, and recitations. The box plan is open at Chns. B°eg and Co.’s.
