MERRITT'S GOOD SEASON

Englisli newspapers received in Sunnier by Mr J. Merritt, the father of the New Zealand cricketer, W. E. Merritt, show that the latter has had a particularly good season. Playing for East Lancashire against Church, he made nearly half the runs for his team, and, according to the Sports Telegraph, the New Zealander polished off the Church innings in summary fashion, taking three wickets in four balls to bring his total for the match to six for 50.

In a later issue of the same paper, the following statement occurs; “In two matches Merritt took 17 wickets for 77 runs, gave his side a couple of smashing victories, and brought his season’s total of wickets to 53, the highest in the League. It was very fitting that an hour or two after he had accomplished all this, he was asked by the Meadows’ committee to append his signature to the agreement retaining him ns a professional for next year. Until he did this there were mysterious whisperings that the signature would be that of Larwood. Well, Larwood is not coming to the Meadows after all. East Lancashire will put their faith in Merritt. lie lias the desire to settle down in these parts, and it is the earnest hope of all connected with the club that bis slay will be a happy one, both for his club and for himself and his side.’’
