This sketch, by Lieutenant Thomas Moore, R.N., an officer on H.M.S. Alligator, which was despatched from Sydney by Governor Bourke in 1834 to rescue Mrs Guard and her children, who had been wrecked in the whaler Harriet near Cape Egmont in April of that year and were prisoners in the hands of the Maoris, has not previously been available for publication. It shows the deserted pa, following the bombardment by the Alligator’s guns and the entrance by which some of the Maoris escaped.
