THE OTAGO HUNT CLUB’S MEETING

The Otago Hunt Club’s annual race meeting will take place to-day, and a varied programme promises to provide an interesting day’s sport. The card consists of flat racing, hurdle racing, steeplechasing and unusually large fields in the two light harness events, so that it will make a widespread appeal. The_ going will be somewhat holding, but will not, be so bad as anticipated unless the weather breaks and heavy rain sets in. It might, possibly, suit the majority if rain did soften the going and render it less holding. The racing will start with the 12.55 SEAVIEW HACK AND HUNTERS’

The field in the above contains a good deal of the novice class without form as a guide over hurdles. Under the circumstances, Black Duke and Red Lancer may be the popular picks. 1..30 — BROCKVILLE TROTTING HANDICAP, Of 70sovs. Class 3.5. One mile and a-quarter.

Horses likely to be favoured in this big field are Norrie Rock, Glencree, and Bright Voyage.

The field for the Otago Hunt Club Steeplechase does not run to any great numerical strength, but still contains ample material to supply a rather interesting race. The majority of the field are proved fencers, with a good chance of completing the course. Winning and placed form is well represented. Peterette and Umtali, after showing wining form, both finished fairly close to the placed lot in the Grand National Steeplechase, and will be meeting much weaker opposition at Wingatui to-day. Nught Club is a good fencer and showed winning form at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting, and there is not much bettveen her on recent form and Willow' Glen. Wi Tui won at Timaru, and again at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting held at Riccarton. Lammerlaw is a promising sort, and so_ is Parasang, who will probably show improved form. Night Club may start favourite, with Willow Glen and Peterette next in demand, and Parasang as a rather dangerous outsider. 2.40

The large field in the President’s Handicap will make the draw at the barrier a matter of importance, and a good beginner near the rails will hold an advantage. Queen of Song and Bellbird and Effozel and Blatherskite will be bracketed. The best beginners are Queen of Song, Shock, Silk Paper, Cupbearer. Effozel, and Arrow Arc. Some of the others come amongst the unknown quantity. Braw Lad did not get a clear run in his races at Riccarton, where he was amongst big fields, but would be regarded as dangerous. Aro Arc, Cupbearer, Silk Paper, or Braw Lad may attract most attention from investors. 3.15

Hula Belle, Chrysology, and Rin Tin Tin are trained away from Wingatui, and their condition will depend on now they appeal in the birdcage. Hula Belle won at the Dunedin winter meeting, and was considered good enough to take up to Wellington. She has winning from up to a mile, and would be regarded as very dangerous if fancied by the stable. Master Anomaly is working fairly well, but would have to be taken on trust over a mile. He shaped creditably at the Dunedin winter meeting. Gustavo will have a good following, but he seems a bit short of work or else has developed laziness on the track. Grand Finale is well, but is rumoured as a doubtful starter. He would be dangerous if sent to the post. Chrysology has been off the scene tor some time, but the fact that L. J. Ellis has accepted the mount suggests that he holds a chance. Palmary is engaged in the hurdle race, _ but in any ease the distance may be a bit short. Still, she went well in a gallop yesterday morning, but from a moving start. Meadow Lark is bright and well, but is not getting any younger, and may not see out the distance. Rin Tin Tin is another that has been off the scene for some time, and is another that requires a lead from the stable. Red Dance should run a good mile under a light weight. She won over the distance on the first day of the Dunedin winter meeting, and now meets Osculate on better terms. Osculate subsequently showed good form on the final day of the Grand National meeting. The order of favouritism may be Red Dance, Osculate, and Hula Belle with Master Anomaly a possibility. 3.SO.—WINGATUI TROTTING HANDICAP, Of, 70sovs. Class 3.43. One mile and a-half. Eaton Hall and Velvet had a good go in the Hunters’ Plate at the South Canterbury Hunt Club meeting. Eaton Hall has been dropped from 12.1 to 10.13 and meets Velvet on Clb better terms. The figures and possibility of Velvet improving suggests that he will start a better favourite than Eaton Hall. Jaunt may be regarded as next best.

Another excellent field will be seen out in the Vauxhall Handicap, which concludes the card. Several of those engaged may be seen out earlier in the day and give a better line to their chance than what may exist on paper. Saxophone will be bracketed with Amy Johnson, and

the combination may start favourite, Knocklong, Braw Lad, and Sungem may also Be amongst the popular selections for the race.
