The unexpected presence in London of some shv birds is revealed in a bulletin issued by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. A short time ago a snipe was observed at the southern end of rhe Gardens. As far as can be ascertained this is the first record of the presence of a snipe at Kew. About the same time a woodcock, one of the most elusive of birds, was seen on several occasions. Kingfishers are observed fairly regularly, both bv the islands on the lake and. more rarely, near the pond and water garden. Another interesting bird recently in the Gardens was a silverywhite hen blackbird, which could be seen anv day in the grounds of the Queen's Cottage-
