Among the Maoris Under the title “A White Boy Among the Maoris in the Forties ” (Reed, Is 6d net) is published a booklet containing some of the recollections 'of- Canon J. W. Stack of his early life and the earlier period of hie pastoral charge to the Maori population of the Canterbury diocese. This material appeared some time ago in the pages of . the Daily Times, edited by Mr A. H. Reed, of Dunedin, and is now presented with a foreword by the late _ canon'S_ daughter, and very numerous illustrations and a cover in colour. For Debaters The only objection that might be taken to “ The Art of Debating ” (Robertson and Mullens, Is 6d net), by J. Baggeridge and P. Masel, is that it provides debaters with such ample material for discussion, subjects being suggested and salient points pro and con supplied, that its possession might tend to destroy initiative, obviating the need for ingenuity and research which should be part of the debater'a task. But that is an unfair criticism of a booklet which, in small compass, offers such aid to those interested in debate, both in dealing with the formation or clubs and the marshalling of facts, and all other matters that come within the scope suggested by the title. Educational Broadcasts In “ Educational • Broadcasts to Schools ” the New Zealand Broadcasting Board has issued a complete syllabus of the programme of lessons and talks which has been arranged by its Educational Advisory Committee for putting over the air from stations 2YA and 4YA between the present month and December of this year. The schedule includes a wide range of subjects of educational interest, and each talk is dealt with separately in a section which gives the words of songs, or maps to be referred to, or other information in text and illustration, to which listeners may refer during the progress of the broadcasts.

Nature Study In the July-September issue of the Australian Museum Magazine, which is fully illustrated, with a front cover illustration in colour, are several articles of exceptional interest. H. C. Barry contributes some pages on " Piccaninnies of the ‘ Centre , describing the aboriginal children in the Hermannsburg district, K. C. M’Keown writes on trout foods, A. H. Chisholm provides an entertaining account, of the fighting and strategy by which birds defend their homes. Other articles, notes, and book reviews make up a valuable journal for students of nature. Miscellaneous

Spilt Ink, the cyclostyled monthly which was first in the field, enlarges its size, scope, and appeal with the August issue, which devotes two pages to the activities of amateur drama in the Dominion. This issue contains the usual accounts of Spilt Ink Club meetings throughout New Zealand, and several brief articles and paragraphs, including a warning to writers, which cannot be too frequently repeated, against “ publishing sharks.” (N. F. Hoggard, Oriental parade, Wellington). The Christ’s College Register for August contains full accounts of all activities at the school during a term which produced good results on the Rugby field, and saw much useful and profitable achievement in other departments, such as debating, literature, music, and so on. The magazine is fully illustrated.

Sir Max Pemberton Two announcements from Selwyn and Blount’s autumn list are Sir Max Pemberton’s Life of Sir Henry Royce and "Wanderings in Tasmania,” by Mr George Porter.
