ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
MAN’S LEG CRUSHED Charles Morgan, 54 years of age, residing at 83 Harrow street, was admitted to the Hospital at 8.45 yesterday morning suffering from a crushed lower part of the right leg. The injury was received whilst he was cleaning stone for the new Post Office. SUDDEN DEATH Miss Janet Dempster Ritchie, a typist in the Lands and Deeds Office, died suddenly at her home, at 169 a Cargill road, on Thursday evening. Miss Ritchie had been ill for a week with what was assumed to be influenza, but had not been attended by a doctor. The coroner yesterday morning directed that a post-mortem examination should be conducted. The deceased was 29 years of age. DROWNING FATALITY George Roy M'Leod, a single man, aged 25, whose mother resides at 257 Castle street, Dunedin, was drowned yesterday afternoon at 2.20 at the Waitaki Hydro Works. M'Lood, who was engaged on one of the sluice gates, went to get a rope to secure an air pick and apparently he slipped from the ladder into the water. The river was running high, and M'Leod was weighed down by his clothes and rubber thigh boots. He was sighted about 50 yards downstream and then disappeared. All social activities at the camp were postponed yesterday and search parlies were organised, but late last night the body had not been recovered. DEATH OF YOUNG BOY (Special to Daily Timfs.) BALCLUTHA, August 31. The adjourned inquest on the body of Sidney John Homan, aged 6J years, who was struck by a motor car on the main road approaching Clinton on August 18, was held yesterday at Clinton before Mr A. Martin, district coroner. Constable Doak represented the police. Dr Frengley. medical practitioner, Balclutha, gave evidence that death was clue to laceration of the brain. John Burnett Wilson (driver of the ear). Frank Norman Hanna and Douglas William Dyer also gave evidence, and the coroner returned a verdict that death was caused by laceration of the brain and a fracture of (lie skull, caused ley the deceased being knocked down by a motor car driven by J. B. Wilson, Mataiira, no blame being attachable to anyone.
