In the Eastern United States grass court championships, semi-finals,- Miss James defeated Miss Norman Taubele (New York), .0 —0, 7 —5; Miss Stammers defeated Miss Jane Sharp (Pasadena), 6—2, C —l. Miss Stammers will meet Baroness Levi and Miss James will play Miss Nuthall on Friday. THE MEN’S SINGLES NEW YORK, August 30. (Received August 31, at 9 p.m.) In the men’s quarter-finals at the Rye tournament, Mako defeated Hall o—4, 7—5; Shields defeated Sutter 6—o, 6—4; Parker defeated Tidball. 6—l, 6—3; Lott defeated Bell 6—l, 6—3.
