WOMEN'S DIVISION N.Z. FARMERS' UNION.

Reports of meetings of branches are requested, but they should be furnished Promptly, tor the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be assured. The Owaka branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union met in Memorial Hall on the 23rd inst. A competition for best shortbread wag won by Mrs Kielty and the shortbread sold amongst members for the benefit of the division. A crate of baskets was received from the Blind Institute, Auckland, and several were sold. It was decided to send Miss Frances Wright as representative to the Country Girls' Week.

The Waihola branch met on Wednesday, Mrs J. Bradshaw being hostess. The roll call was “How I check the fly pest.” The competition, a plate of six plain scones, was won by Mrs Huddleston, Mrs F. M’Carthy being second, and Miss E. Bungard third. A demonstration on rug making was given by Mrs C. Popham, of Titri, and Mrs James Smith, of Waihola. There was also an exhibition of home-made slippers.

The Kelso branch met in the church vestry on August 21. Mrs L. J. Hunter, senior vice-president, presided. Miss M. MTntosh was elected to attend the Educational Week for country girls. The roll call was “An exchange of garden seeds.” The competition, “A supper cloth," was won by Me* A. Wilson first and second, Mrs A. Stewart third. JJr Robertson gave an instructive lecture on "Burns." Mesdames 0, Duff and A. Thomson were hostesses.

Mrs Callander presided when the Tahatika branch met. Miss Sylvia Roulston was chosen to attend Country Girls’ Week. Mrs Roulston consented to bake the cake for the birthday party. The roll call was, “ What would you do if you won an art union? ” The competition, which was won by Miss M. Roulston, was the “ Best-knitted child’s garment.” Mesdames Mudie and Olsen were hostesses.

A W.D.F.U. birthday party was held at Miller's Flat on August 24. A concert and dance were held to celebrate the branches fourth birthday. A cake was given by Mr R. J. Kinaston, ot Roxburgh. Mrs 1 C. Hainsworth, Ettrick, lit the four candles, which afterwards were blown out by Mrs J. Scott, Roxburgh. Those taking part in the prowere:—Mrg E. Manuel (Coal , Mrs B. Smellie (Miller’s Flat), Mr, Mrs, and Master Maxwell (Dunedin), Mies May Sheehy (Miller’s Flat), Mies Dora Arnott (Teviot), Mies L. Stockdill (Miller’s Flat). Miss Nancy Rome (Dunedin), Mr L. Millar (Miller's Flat), Mr A. R. Alexander (Roxburgh), Mrs T- Stockdill (Miller’s Flat). During the evening there were a treasure hunt, a lucky partner dance, and a game of proverbs. * * • a.

The Cromwell branch met in the Anglican Hall on Thursday week, when Mrs T. Smith presided. A competition for home-made sweets was won by Mrs W. M'Millan, with Mrs Bowie second and third. The roll call was “ A recipe for home-made sweets.” A competition, “Making a hat from a piece of paper and three pins,” wag won by Mrs Henman, with Airs O’Malley second. A competition, “ Tasting white powders,” was won by Alisa Hcggie, with Mrs R. Ritchie second and Airs Dungey third. Alias A. De Bettencor and Miss Evelyn Smith were the girls chosen to attend the Country Girls’ Week in Dunedin. Hostesses were Alcsdaraes Alooney and Partridge.
