Un Thursday of next week the Otago Hunt Club ball will be held in the Town Hall. Last year’s ball was so successful that particular interest is being taken in this year’s, and a brilliant social function is looked forward to. ❖ >}; . * The friendly societies of Mosgiel held a combined ball last night in the Coronation Hall. In addition to the members and officers of the local lodges there were numbers of visiting brethren present from punedin, There wag a large attendance, and the grand march, led by the Druids just before supper, a feature of the evening. Bros. E. Freeman, A. Chadwick, J. Thomson, and W. Roberts were M.C.’s. A committee of members of the various lodges and their lady friends attended to the supper arrangements. 9 IVIr and Mrs G. A. Goughian gave a very mlly house dance in Wain’s Hotel to celebrate the coming of age of their eldest daughter, Kathleen. Mrs Goughian, wearing a frock of cherry pebbly crepe, received the guests, assisted by her daughter, who wore a charming frock of white crepe, the cape of which had a touch _of black, and carried a bouquet, the gift of the staff of Wain’s. The lounge was cleared for dancing, and supper was served in the dining room, where the tables,were beautifully arranged with spring flowers, a birthday cake with its 21 candles > being the central decoration. The guest of the evening was the recipient of many gifts, and was literally showered with flowers.

Yesterday afternoon a delightful tea P«rty was given by Lady Ferguson in the dining room of the Otago Women’s Club for the judges, winners, and entrants in the recent short story competition. The guests met in the lounge and were presented by Lady Ferguson, who wore a smart ensemble of maroon windswept crepe, with white accessories and a maroon felt hat—to the judges—Mr Ash and Mr M’Cormick. Tea was served in the dining room around a large table on which daffodils made a bright centrepiece. There were present Mesdames Galway, Eastgate, Sutherland Ross, Hervey, Rodgerson, Canter, and Williams, and Misses M'Dougall, Logie, Kicolson, and Service. After tea, Lady Ferguson and Mrs Eastgate spoke a few words, and Mr Ash talked about the competition. _ The rest of the time was spent in discussing the art of the short story, and was very stimulating and enjoyable.

The jubilee ball of the Alhambra Football Club, held in the Town Hall Concert Chamber last evening, was an unqualified success, and merry and bright from start to finish. The grand march, directed by ’ Mr I. Grant, was led by the president, Mr Kestieaux (original member of the club) and Mrs Restieaux, the latter in electric blue georgette; Mr J. M'Cleary with Mrs Briggs, in floral silk voile; Mr A. Grieve (original member) with Mrs Restieaux, jun., in brown chiffon velvet; Mr Briggs with Miss F. Mitchell, in lettuce green suede cloth; Mr Lowry with Mrs Fenby, in black georgette and lace; Mr J. Mitchell with Mi's Mitchell, in black sand crepe; Mr and Mrg Ira Grant, the latter in black sand crepe; Mr J. King with Miss Wilde, in gold crinkly satin; and Mr Larkins with Mrs L. Black, in lace and sequins. Supper was served in the supper room at tables adorned with spring blossom, and was supplemented by a fivetiered cake with a red and black flag (Alhambra colours) at the top, and a large green base representing a football field with kewpie players.
