IMPORTANT STEP TAKEN RESIDENT COMMISSIONER ARRIVES, (Pe« United Pbcss Association.) WELLINGTON, August 29. The first Resident Australian Trade Commissioner, Mr R. H. Nesbitt, arrived by the Wanganella to-day. Interviewed, lie said he was looking forward to making, many friends. The appointment by the Commonwealth Government of a Trade Commissioner to reside in New Zealand was definite evidence of a desire for closer relationship between the two countries, and, further, was a gesture of goodwill and brotherhood. He referred to the fact of New Zealand having a resident representative in Australia, and by having resident representation in each country facility was provided for a readier exchange of views on questions of moment and importance. Since the announcement of. his appointment, Mir. Nesbitt has spent many weeks visiting the States of the Commonwealth,'and thus has had the opportunity of personally seeing at work many of the industries, both large and small, which are interested in trade with the Dominion, as well as discovering at first hand some of the problems and difficulties that may have to be solved in the course of the duties of his office. Mr Nesbitt said the trade agreement entered into last year was one that should enable .trade to flow with greater ease and freedom between New Zealand and, Australia. The- attitude of mind towards its operation should be mutually sympathetic. It would be bis privilege to endeavour to place the viewpoint of the Commonwealth of Australia, not only before the Government of the Dominion, but also before the people of New Zealand; and in this way it was hoped to bring about a much better understanding as to the attitude and outlook of the Australian Government and of the commercial and primary producing sections of the Commonwealth. He mentioned that tourist interests would also come under his care.
