PALMERSTON The Palmerston branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, together with the Women’s Division, held its ann.ial ! social in the Town Hall on Tuesday night, when there were nearly 100 present, including several visitors from Waikouaiti. The president of the Women’s Divison (Mrs W. R. Wedge) welcomed all present. The proceedings were comi menccd with a euchre tournament, the Mayoress (Mrs W. B, Galloway) afterwards presenting the prizes. These were won by Miss E. M'Donald (Hunterville) and Mr E. Scott, the consolation prizes going to Miss F. Coutts and Mr G. Sinclair. A programme of dances followed, interspersed with vocal music. A recitation was given by Miss M. Twaddle, and songs by Mrs W. R. Wedge and Miss E. Brown, Miss E. Shcat acting as accompanist. Dance music was supplied by Mesdames W. R. Wedge, J. Kerse, Misses M. Stent, M. Park (piano), and Messrs ,T. Purvis (accordion) and D. H. Ross (bagpipes). The M.C. was Mr N. M, Wright. MIDDLEMARCH Mr and Mrs John Turnbull were met in the A. and P. Hall at a social evening by vay large,number, of friends to bid them farewell before they left the district to take up residence in'Dunedin. Mr and Mrs Turnbull have been connected with the affairs'of the district for the last 40 years, and for the last 25 years they have beeii in occupation of the small grazing run which they have now disposed of. During the whole period of • their residence in the district Mr and Mrs Turnbull have been most useful and valued members of the community, and have been in close touch with the various organisations for the advancement and betterment, of the farming community.’ Mr T. Carruthers, who was in the chair, expressed the, regret of all present at the early departure of Mr; and Mrs Turnbull. Mr 'F. G. Glover, as representing the farmers, spoke in appreciative terms of Mr Turnbull as a farmer and also as a neighbour, while Mr W. Moynihan, representing the sports bodies, Mr H- N. Elliot, representing the stock firms, and Mr W. S. Williams, .representing the tradespeople, also spoke in eulogistic terms of the guests, of the evening. The chairman took the opportunity to present Mr,, and Mrs' Turnbull With two easy chairs as-a 'slight token of esteeeni and appreciation, and assured them that they carried away the best wishes,of a very_ large circle of friends, who earnestly wished for them much comfort and satisfaction in their retirement from active life. Mr. Turnbull replied in suitable terms. The evening was spent in dancing. Mr and Mrs Turnbull .left on Friday for their new home.. ■*’ On Friday last the members of SI. Chad’s Anglican Church held their annual social. There was a large gathering of local people, who spent an enjoyable evening at dancing and cards, with concert items interspersed throughout the programme. An orchestra, consisting of Mrs Ayson, Messrs G. Peat, F. Howell, W. Newman, N. Tisdall. and G. Renwick, supplied the dance music, and Mr W, Williams acted as M.C. Songs wore contributed by Mr J. Jones and Mr Chris-
tophers, pianoforte solos by the Rev. Curzon Siggers, recitations by Mrs R. N. Elliot, specialty dances by Miss Welch, and bagpipe music by Mr W. Jones. Am excellent supper was, provided by the ladies. Votes of thanks were passed to the performers, to Mrs Garrett for the arrangement of the musical programme, and to Mrs G. Howell for her supervision of the supper arrangements. The Rev. W. A. Cnrzon Siggers, who has been in charge of the Anglican .Church here for some months past, in a brief speech, expressed bis pleasure at meeting the people of Strath Taieri on such a social occasion.
