THE REV. DR GIBB

VISIT TO AUSTRALIA • The Rev. Dr James Gibb, first '■moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, is at present visiting Sydney (says a recent issue of the (Sydney Morning Herald). He is especially interested in orphanages, and after inspecting the Burnside Homes at Parramatta, expressed great admiration Sor that institution. He considered it I splendid example of organisations for the care of children. 1 Dr Gibb (continued the Herald) was the originator of the League of Nations Hnion in New Zealand, which, he said, had a larger membership than the union in New South Wales. It was disappointing that the New South Wales Union diid not have a larger membership, because it was clear'that the union would not function unless it had large public support. If the churches, newspapers afid other institutions would get together ami lead the way, there would be a new world. The spirit of peace should be intensified. #* The churches here, as everywhere else,” he said, “are fighting a hard battle, and the practical disappearance oft the Lord’s Day does not make the battle any easier. The Sabbath in Sydney seems to have gone—much more so tl4n in New Zealand.” Dr Gibb was ordained in Melbourne in 11883, and was for some years in a charge at Footscray before going to Dunedin.
