NEW PROFESSION

MOTOR ACCIDENT “VICTIMS.” A pew profession, that of accident victim,” has been brought to light _ by a law case at Lisbon —and an Englishman has been the cause of the revelation. The Englishman, driving Ins car through Lisbon, knocked down a man who suddenly stepped off the pavement in front of him. “ Awful pain,” groaned the man, who did not actually appear to have been badly hurt. “Give me 10s, and I’ll tell the police it was my own fault.” The “offer” was evidently influenced by the fact (hat by the law of Portugal any motorist involved in an accident is _ put under provisional arrest until inquiries have been made. The Englishman refused to pay and he had no difficulty in proving to the police that the man had taken no care to prevent the accident. Other motorists afterwards said the man had played the same trick on each of them—only they had all agreed to pay him the sum demanded before the arrival of the police.
