FLOODS IN INDIA
VILLAGES WASHED AWAY HEAVY DEATH ROLL FEARED (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) CALCUTTA, August 26. Although some of the floods are subsiding the water in the Ganges at Patna remains nearly 40 feet above normal. Many villages have been washed away and scores of carcasses of caitle, thatched roofs, and houses have been carried down stream. It is also feared that there will bo a heavy death roll. The area around Monghyr, which was devastated by the earthquake in January, is now inundated by the Ganges. Grave fears are felt for the safety of the £3,000,000 Hardingo bridge over the Ganges on the East Bengal line. An army of 1100 workmen has been employed since March in an effort to save the bridge from destruction by the erection of protective works, which are designed to guide the erratic course of the river.
