HOUSE IN SESSION

PROGRAMME FOR THIS WEEK CUSTOMS AMENDMENT BILL THE FINANCIAL DEBATE (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, August 27. The debate on the second reading of the Customs Acts Amendment Bill will be resumed to-morrow, when Parliament reassembles after the week-end adjournment. As the sitting time has been extended to midnight as from to-morrow, it is expected that one day will be sufficient for those members who have not yet spoken to have their say. The Financial debate will begin when the other is finished, so it is likely that the Budget will be considered by the House on Wednesday and the following days. The length of the debate will depend to a large extent on the Labour Party’s tactics, but, although there are points in the Budget which are sure to provoke long discussion, it is not anticipated that an abnormal amount of time will be taken up. Members are entitled to speak for an hour in the Financial debate, and the scope of subjects is not limited. Thus the debate generally opens up a wide range of discussion.

After the Budget is disposed of, the House will proceed to the committee stages of the Customs Amendment Bill, which will probably occupy at least a week and possibly longer. By that time either the Native Affairs Commission or the Dairy Commission should be ready to make its report. The former commission, which was due to submit its recommendations at the end of the present month, has had its time extended until September 30. The Dairy Commission will probably require af extension of time as well.
