The conclusion of the match was very sensational, England being defeated by the narrow margin of seven runs. On the day following the Australian victory the Sporting Times published the following! obituary notice suitably displayed in a manner befitting a tombstone inscription :—" In affectionate remembrance of English Cricket, which died at the Oval, on 29th August, 1882. Deeply lamented by a large circle of Sorrowing Friends and Acquaintances. R.I.F. N.H. — The, body will be cremated and the Ashes taken to Australia."
