WRESTLING

AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS GOOD STANDARD ATTAINED. Some excellent displays were given .in the Pioneer Hall last night, when the Otago Amateur Wrestling Association staged the preliminary bouts in its annual championships. Good progress has been made during'the year by those who have participated before. There are some most promising novices. G. Terry, C. Turner, and T. Walker were perhaps the best exponents. . , , There were numerous entries, and the bouts were continued until 11 p.m. hive* minute rounds between boys of light weight are very strenuous, and though none appeared over-distressed, it might be better if. in the lighter classes, four-minute rounds were the order. The following are the results: —• LIGHT-WEIGHT. J. White 9.9 beat R. Overton 9.7}. Overton was the quicker at applying holds and had White on the mat with a good headloek. White’s strength, however, enabled him to free himself and he obtained the first fall with a body press. The second round was almost exactly similar, White obtaining the verdict with a second fall. T. E. H. Walker 9.7 beat F. Reach 9.7}. A tame bout owing to Reach's use of the mat to counter his cleverer opponent. At the beginning of the second round Reach applied his knee to Walker s stomach and was promptly disqualified. G. Terry 9.7 beat A. Walker 9.8. Terry’s experience gave him considerable advantage, but Walker proved fa.irly elusive, even when in trouble. In the second round Terry secured a fall with a head scissors and armbar, and in the third with a body press. v Semi-final. G. Terry 9.7 beat' N. Thomson 9,7 in two falls. This was the best and, most strenuous bout of the evening. Despite his previous- exertions, Terry was in fine fettle, and though Thomson took him to the mat, secured a good headloek for the first fall. Thomson again seemed slightly the faster, but Terry’s skill'-was sufficient to give him victory with a body scissors and press. ' . | ■- ■ : WELTER-WEIGHT. W. Walker 10.5} beat W. Fitzgerald 10.1 by one fall. It was quite a byisk bout, but Walker was too clever and strong for Fitzgerald, who, however, put up a most game display. Walker secured his-fall in the second round from a cradle hold, and was content merely to retain his advantage in the third. T. Corny 10.6} beat T. Fennel-. 10.4 on points. It looked as though Pennell would win fairly easily, and he gave Corry a torrid time for the first round, but he lacked initiative, and allowed Corry to carry the fight to him, being brought to the mat several times. Corry deserved his win. H. Wilson 10.7 beat B. Oates 9.10 in ' < ~ two straight falls. Wilson was far too clever, for his lighter opponent, and secured his* falls in quick time; middle-weights; ■ : C. Turner 11.0 beat J. Henry 11.4 on points. There was some solid wrestling in this bout, with Turner making most of it. He was more finished than Henry, and nearly secured a fall in the second round with an arm roll and press. Turner continued the aggressor to the finish, L. Goughian 11.5 beat J. Fairweather 11.0 in two straight falls. Goughian was far too r fast for Pairweather, and secured his falls with a head hold and body press and a body scissors and chin hold. : FEATHER-WEIGHT. A. Beveridge 8.13} beat A. Sanders 8.4. Beveridge had too much science for Sandes, and obtained two' quick falls with body presses. LIGHT HEAVY-WEIGHT. L. Goughian 11.5 beat L. Hunt ,12.5 on . .. -i ■ ■; . ■ points. Goughian strove hard to throw Hunt, who successfully resisted. Cojighlan owed his win to his aggressiveness. FLY-WEIGHT. D. Alexander 8.0 beat H. Venn 6.9 by - two falls. Despite the disparity in weights this was quite a fair bout, the midget Venn, while his strength lasted, putting up a very plucky display. BANTAM-WEIGHT. J. Dick 8.6 beat A. Sandes 8.4 on • ' points. ■ As fast a bout as any, but science was somewhat lacking. Both boys brought each other to the mat with some good throws, but neither was skilled or strong enough to. obtain an advantage once there. Another round of three minutes was necessary before Dick got the verdict for being slightly inore active. Messrs W. and M. Goughian and C. L. Finer were the referees. DRAW" FOR TO-NIGHT.
