Mr P. M'Skimming, M.P., was a passenger for • Balclutha by the south express on Saturday night. Dr Murray M'George was a passenger by the north express on Saturday morning, en route for Palmerston North. Mr W. Sharp left Dunedin for' Wellington by the north express on Saturday morning. A Press Association cable message from London states that Mr Malcolm MacDonald will be accompanied to Australia by his sister, Miss Sheila MacDonald.
Mr H. M. Mackay, managing director of Wanaka Motors, Ltd., has returned from a business visit to Auckland. Mr S. Rice, of Wyndham, has been elected chairman of the Southland Education Board for a further term.
Mr F. J. Hartley, of the mailroom staff of the Dunedin Post Office, who has been transferred to Auckland, left for the north by the morning express on Saturday. Mr E. Empson, of Christchurch, who judged the instrumental sections at the Dunedin Competitions, will leave on his return north to-day. A Press Association cable message from Bos Angelea states that in a quiet ceremony Adolph Menjou, the film star, was married to Veree Teasdale, who is also a motion picture player. Mr B. J, Todd, general manager of the Associated Motorists Petrol Company, Ltd., left by the Monterey from Auckland on Saturday for the United States and Europe. Mr W. A. C. Smith, who has been acting as temporary assistant at the Southland Boys' High School, has received intimation of his appointment to the staff of Wellington > College.
Mr A. H. Carey; manager of the Greymouth, branch of the Bank of New Zealand, who is retiring on November 30, will be succeeded by Mr A. N. Baber, manager of the Hokitika branch. Mr Ken Willis, of Dunedin, has been appointed South Island representative for Messrs Harold F. Ritchie Co. of New Zealand, Ltd., and will leave this morning to take up his residence in Christchurch. Members of the engineering staff of the Dunedin City Corporation met on Saturday morning in order to make a presentation to one of their number, Mr D. A. Lane, on the occasion of his approacaing marriage. The presentation, which took the form of an oak clock, was handed to Mr Lane by the, deputy city engineer (Mr S. G. Scoular). As a mark of appreciation of his valuable services as starter of the Gore Trotting Club over a period of 33. years, Mr F. Wallis, sen., of Gore, has the recipient of a handsome silver salver presented to him by the club on his retirement from the position. With the gift was forwarded a letter from the officials of the club thanking Mr Wallis for his services. Mr F. W. Platts, S.M., presided at the Tauranga Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for the last time prior to his retirement next month. Members of the legal profession, justices of the peace and police took the opportunity to say farewell to Mr Platts. Appreciative references were made to his work both in the Cook Islands and New Zealand. Mr Platts intends to reside in Hamilton. He will be succeeded by Mr E. L. Walton, S.M.
