"HEAR, HEAR"!
TO THE EDITOR
S 3 — ■' That completes the business," was the remark which the Deputy Mayor of St. Kilda is reported to, have completed the special "meeting *of his council on Friday night, when the council, in most curious fashion, proceeded to impose further injustices. The . position is so clear, Sir, that it is really astounding that any man .with the shreds of fairness in his anatomy could have permitted, wnat has occurred to occur. Mr H. H. Leary (at the time Cr, Leary) had rendered very fine voluntary service in connection with looking after the men engaged on the No. 5 schtmej and the council, to mark its sense of this fine service, voted Cr Leary—very much against his will—the ■urn of £lO. Cr Carman will say. whether that is, not so. The council did a wrong thing in voting this, money, and Cr Leary did a wrong .thing in accepting it. Cr Leary was automatically disqualified—he alone had to suffer the the council had the right'to reappoint him. What would any fair-minded body of men have'done in such Nothing; but reappoint Mr: Leary; Mr Leary was, however,; .metaphorically ■„, in "Judas Iscariot fashion, kissed and^forgiven,. but oh a-vote of- the council was .rejected for. Mr M; J. Kelly. Then the Mayor' (Mr J. Beattie) and Crs Robinson, *aird, and. Glue resigned as a protest, and at the ■pecial .meeting last Friday night the council reappointed Mr Beattie and Mr Leary and > appointed Messrs Sellar and Lunam to fill the four, vacancies., • It was a despicable action. A few days ago Mr Leary was rejected \bythe council. On Friday night he was reappointed, to the council. WhyHhe changed front, in the interval? Cr Morison talks: about presiure being brought to bear on Mr. .Beattie. It would be of interest, to know how much he brought - to; beari Just" imagine nominating a man to fill a-vacancy oh an important borough council; and nobody knowing how to, spell his'.name! ■ Apparently,the of the councillors did not know who Mr Lunam was, yet Cr Griffiths, in.vSeconding" Cr Morisoh's nomination of Mr Lunam, .said he was a (fit--and proper person to represent the t citizens of St. He may be, but ! that, has yet to be proved. Mr Edgar stated "That completes the business." T say "hear, hear." It has "completed the business'? in publie life of Messrs Edgar, Morison, Anderson, Carman, Hunter, Grif--fiths, and Kelly. When Mr F. Jones, MS. for Dunedin South,; hears what has helped ; to do, in the name of the South Dunedin Labour Party. I wonder what he wilUsay? Fortunately the elections are not far : away, though it "seems :•*,'long; weary,: time: to "have to wait.'iill next/May before Nemesfa can come along with his" axe and chop off the civic heads.'of the persons I have named.lam, etc;., Impatient ExEcflrrioNEßi. ;
