RUGBY LEAGUE

OTAGO-CANTERBURY MATCH ABANDONED As the result of telegraphic advice received from the Canterbury Rugby League on Saturday morning, the Otago representative team did not make its projected trip to Christchurch. The message from Christchurch stated that as complications had arisen, the march between Otago and Canterbury could not be plavcd. The news was received just in time to prevent the Otago team from leaving by the 11.35 a.m. express. SOUTH ISLAND TEAM. The South Island team to meet the North Island representatives at Auckland on Saturday has been selected. Six Otaeo players were nominated, and only J. Cinders, of the City Club, has been selected as emergency forward. He will leave by to-morrow's for the north, and will accompany the team to Auckland, i Seven Canterbury and six West Coast players have been selected bv Mr A. Hall as the South Island team.

The seventh International Road Congress will be held this year in Germany, at Munich, from September 3 to September 8. The chosen venue is most appropriate, for Germany certainly realises the importance of good roads. She has just embarked on a "five-year plan" at an estimated cost of £160,000,000, to build a network of motor highways,' which will connect the whole country with a system of express through roads, specially reserved for fast motor traffic. Over 4000 miles of new roads hove far been planned, and work has already begun on about 101)0 miles. Seventy per cent, of-the cost will be spent in wages; a quarter of a million men are expected to be given direct employment, and many more will benefit by the decision to use, wherever possible, materials produced from German sources. It is that the improvements in traffic facilities will save German '. motor transport £77,000,000 a year. The new roads are to be built along, the lines already adopted to some extent in England; that is, they will be in two sections, an "up" and a "down" road, separated by * grass path some 15 feet in width. Trees and shrubs are to be planted along the centre of this path in order to shield the driver from the headlight glare of oncoming traffic.
