PALMERSTON A few spectators witnessed a Rugby football match in the Palmerston Recreation Reserve on Saturday between Eastern District Junior Grade and the Taieri Plains Sub-union. The visitors won by three points to nil. MKnignt was the best back for Eastern District, while Bell was very safe at full-back, and in the forwards Henderson and M'Gregor were noticeable in a hard-working pack. H. Mockford was the best of the visiting backs, with Bisset and Williams outstanding in the forwards. ! The Palmerston Harrier Club staged its Senior and Junior ; Cross-country Championships on Saturday over courses of five miles and two miles and a-half respectively. The course,' a very hilly one, led up the district road and through paddocks to the Taieri Peak road, and thence along Pryce's road down to the sale yards and back to the Show Grounds; via Gilligan street. In the juniors event, which covered-the course once, G. L. Day quickly established a lead from the rest of the field,'but at the end of two miles A. Johnson had drawn up to within 60 yards of. him. L. K. Kerse was well back in third place. Johnson ran strongly over the last half-mile,. but was unable to head Day, who won by 30 yards. Kerse finished third. The Sealed Handicap resulted: A. Johnson 1, J. Fletcher 2, J. Heyes and G. L. Day (equal) : 3. In the senior event C, Dixon led off at a great pace, but was unable to keep it up, and T. G. Pearson and J. W. Whitfield went to the front, followed by D. B. Martin and A. Forrest; At the end of the first lap Pearson was leading from Whitfield with the rest of the field well strung out. Pearson, led all the way in the second- lap to win by 150 yard s from Whitfield, with Martin well back, third. The Sealed Handicap resulted as follows :^ —D. B. Martin 1, J. W. Whitfield 2, T. G. Pearson and A. H. Forrest (equal) 3.
