MACANDREW ROAD SCHOOL

QUEEN CARNIVAL

About six weeks ago the Macandrew Road School Committee launched a queen carnival for the purpose of raising funds for the upkeep of the school dental clinic, repairs and improvements to the buildings, and general purposes. Last night the carnival was opened at the school gymnasium, and it will oe open this afternoon and evening and also to-morrow and Saturday, and on the final night the result of the voting in the queen carnival will bo announced. The opening ceremony was performed by Mr D. C. Cameron, member of the Otago Education Board, who was introduced by the chairman of the school committee (Mr A. T. MTndoe). Mr Cameron extended his congratulations to those responsible for the organisation on the excellent display they had produced. He went on to speak of the creditable work done by school committees in raising funds for the school, and stated that the Government had recognised the value of these efforts and had made a substantial grant to the incidental fund to be used by way of subsidies. He then declared the carnival open. Mr J. W. Dove, president of the expupils’ association, also spoke, expressing the hopes of his association for the success of the effort. Throughout the evening the hall was well filled and excellent business was done on the various stalls, all of which were well stocked with attractive goods which commanded a ready sale. The amusement department, iu the main school building, was undoubtedly the chief attraction, and there the many amusement devices were accorded full' patronage. The half-hour entertainment arranged by Mr A. H. Robinson, of the school staff, proved extremely successful, the various performers being particularly well received.

It was reported last night that great interest is being shown in the queen carnival contest, for which there ire two queens —Mrs A. T. MTndoe (School Queen) and Miss Thelma Marshall (E.tpupils’ Queen)—and it was expected that the voting during the two final days would be keen.

One of the features of the . effort is the baking and sweets competitions which are being conducted daily. A comprehensive schedule of events was drawn up and the entries received so far have been very encouraging.
