DAVIS CUP MATCH
THE CHALLENGE ROUND AMERICA WINS DOUBLES (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, July 30. In the Davis Cup challenge round between Britain and America the Doubles resulted as follows: — Lott and Stoeffen (America) defeated Lee anj Hughes (Britain), 7 —5, 6—o, 4—G, 9—7. The first set rather disproved the assumption that the inclusion of Lee to give Perry a rest made the Doubles a gift to the Americans. After a shaky start with the weakest lobbing, the British pair found that Stoeffen lacked control of his drives and smashes, and they concentrated on him. Lott, however, took control and broke through the twelfth game.' Stoeffen’e unsteadiness then abated, and the Americans simply massacred their opponents in the second set, notwithstanding Lee’s brilliance in half-volleying and in standing up’ to Stoeffen’s severest thrusts. Hughes was in great form in the third set, when Stoeffen was again faulty .The raggedness of the Americans persisted in th» fourth set, in which the British pair rose to great heights, but Lott proved America’s sheet anchor, Stoeffen occasionally producing an unplayable shot to help to win a hard-pressed match. NO OPEN TOURNAMENTS LONDON, July 31. (Received July 31, at 10 p.m.) A meeting of the International Lawn Tennis Federation decided against the institution of open tournaments in which amateurs would compete with professionals.
