SOUTH CANTERBURY HUNT MEETING

ARCADE . WINS THE STEEPLES

PALERMO SPRINGS A SURPRISE

(From Ouu Special Reporter.) . TIMARU, July 2S. The South Canterbury Hunt Club held its annual race meeting in fine weather, and a good sporting card attracted - a fairly large attendance. The track . provided good going for the time-of the year, just in nice order for racing over jumps, but a bit slow in, comparison to the watch. The card provided'some interesting racing, and some large dividends' tended to keep down the turnover pn the totalisator. ; . ■

The Hadlow Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles introduced a successful novice in Potingham, who won from end to end. He carried the field along at. a solid pace, and, jumping well for a green horse, scored a comfortable win. Mount Boa, Father O’Flynn. and Starshooter dropped back after being prominent in the early stages. Sunward, Adult, Bed, Lance, and Black Duke, were staying on, but had no chance of oVerhauling Potinghum in the . run home. . ■ ' ■' ' ■

Parasang made , liis. run too far from honie and too quickly, and this cost him success in the Pareora Steeples. Witui beat Parasang in the run-home from the last fence owing to the latter tiring. Parasang was well handled .at his fences, and should make a more than useful horse over jumps. ; , ..■■■■ Rational II and Cultivator dropped out of the- South Canterbury Steeples, : for which Arcade started favourite in a good betting race.. Arcade led all. the way. He chqnced one fence'and cut a knee and overeached on the front quarter, but the others could not get- near him. Membo and Peterette did not jump too well. Barrington went well up to the last fence, but Punchestown ..was. beaten when he. fell at the second last jump. Umtali was the only one outside the placed lot to complete the course. • Cheap Money was .smartest out in the Levels Hack Handicap, with Lord Masham, and Brown Pearl ahjd Grampian were’ next. Cheap Money .came Op froin Lord Masham, but had to be ridden right' nut to beat Brown Pearl. Grampian, commenced to tire ;in the. last furlong. The. favourite. First View,- did not, show ,(jp in a field which straggled, soon after the start. - - ■ : ..."- -

Light Club’s superior fencing won the: Teschemaker Memorial Hunt . C,up, .in which Royal Buck might have been dangerous but for making mistakes. Royal Buck is billy, four years old and should improve. ‘

Morepork was made favourite for the Hunters' Plate, but. after bowling along in front of"the field, arid, looking all over, a winner he collapsed when challenged by Velvet who, : ridden oiit tinder the. whip, won by three lengths from Eaton Hall. It did riot say much for the others when Peterrette after rrunnirig second in -the South . Canterbury Steeples .- managed to outstay them to gain a place. A big surprise was in store for connections with the Claremont Handicap. Sprong support came for Silver - -Sight, Gleaner, and Gustavo, and any of the others were .showing a good price. Palermo set a slow pace in the early stages with Niggerhead and; Silver Signt Cleaner arid Gustavo were in the back division. Cleaner got to Palermo in the straight arid looked all over a winner; b.iit the latter got the verdict by a head, with Niggcrliead two lengths away. The distance was generally considered beyond Palermo, but he bad too much speed for the opposition at the end of a slow run race. , '. During .the day £6072 went through ;the totalisator, aa against £6357 10s last year. ‘ The . following are the results;— HADLOW HACK AND HUNTERS’ HURDLE HANDICAP, Of SOsovs. One mile and a-half. 9—G.
