Losing the toss for the ninth successivel time Australia took the field against Durham, the first minor match of the tour. Then the dashing left-handed partnership of Bromley and Darling added 98 in 80 minutes before Darling was easily caught.

Bromley seemed certain to secure, a century, but when trying a big hit he was bowled after a chanceless, brilliant innings of 125 minutes. He hit one six and 11 fours, his off-driving being particularly powerful. Kippax showed, excellent form after his illness.
