SHOT BY GUARDS
A FEMALE CONVICT ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE NEW YORK, July 19. (Received July 20, at 9 p.m.) A message from Little Rock, Arkansas, states that a complete review of the State penal system has resulted from the killing a week ago of a 20-year-old female escaped convict by guards who overtook her in a farmhouse, where she was allegedly attempting to obtain an automobile at the pistol point. The girl, who had a bad record and five previous escape attempts, was said by the guards to have tried to shoot them. It has been disclosed, however, that under the present penal administration, which is only 18 months old, 19 convicts who tried to escape have been shot and killed. Two guards are now held, one on a firstdegree murder charge, and the other on a charge of being an accessory before the fact.
