ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

BUSINESS MAN'S DEATH CORONER'S COMMENT ON EVIDENCE. (Pee'United Pbess CHRISTCHURCH, July 20. At the inquest concerning the death of M r Hubert John Suckling, aged 58, a well-known business man, who was killed while cycling in a collision with a truck driven by A. E. Keys on June 26, the coroner (Mr E. D. Mosley) returned a formal verdict that death was due to injuries. He commented on the evidence ae to the state of the brakes on the truck. "When Keys braked the truck he says it skidded some distance, 12 feet to 17 feet, and then suddenly the brakes evidently failed to act. It seems an extraordinary position that for six years no such occurrence has taken place, and when an accident does occur it is attributed to this. It strains one's credulity to believe that is a fact. However, it may be so. The police in' ; the testa made found that the brakes were inefficient. I don't propose to say anything morfc than that." INQUEST ADJOURNED An inquest was opened yesterday morning before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., concerning the death of Thomas Albert Carr, who died in Hospital on Thursday after having been admitted with head injuries received as the result of being knocked down by a car. Evidence of identification was given by Alexander Downes, a brother-in-law of the deceased. The coroner adjourned the inquest sine die, and ordered a post-mortem examination to be conducted.
