NEW ZEALAND PUBLICITY
WINDOW DISPLAYS WAITOMO CAVES. (Feom Ooe Own Correspondent.) LONDON, May il. With customary enterprise, the High Commissioner’s Publicity Section took advantage of the statement made by Mr G. Bernard Shaw in New Zealand regarding the wonders of the Waitomo Caves, and staged a window display. Mr Shaw’a statement-was cabled .to the press here and was given a good deal of prominence in the papers. Enlargements were immediately made of a dozen scenes in the caves, and these, suitably mounted, were shown in the window. A placard _ bearing Mr Shaw's words in large print formed the centrepiece. Other notices ..described some of the facilities made by the Tourist Department for those who paid a visit to the Dominion.
The display remained in the window for only a week as it had to give way to a dairy display, but it will be replaceff at .the time when, the, maximum numbers of visitors from Europe and America are in London.
At the present time the large window in New Zealand House is arranged as an appeal to the public to buy New Zealand 'blitter. There is an attractive panorama of Dominion landscape and cows. Overshadowing this is a double life-size silhouette of a young farmer,, complete with khaki open-necked shirt. A large notice board is suspended from the hands of the figure. For a space this is out of sight behind the panorama. Suddenly the hands are raised and with them the "notice board on which are the words: “ New Zealand butter and cheese. Ask for it in the shops.” Other important features of the are two printed placards, quoting the . British Medical Council on the. Subject of the'quality and the vitamin contents of New Zealand butter. In the smaller display window there is an exhibit of New Zealand apples. INVITATION TO TOURISTS. In view of the fact that a good many people will be visiting Victoria for the centenary celebrations the High, Commissioner’s Department is taking every opportunity possible to induce those visitors to continue their voyage to New Zealand. As far back as January last the Publicity Section circularised the shipping companies and the chief tourist agencies in Great. Britain in connection with the matter, and has obtained co-operation in every case. Indeed, at, the express, wish of the Government; an attractive small pamphlet is being, prepared for circulation in special quarters in Great' Britain urging visitors to “ step across.” This pamphlet gives . the comparatively small cost of. a fortnight’s. visit,; but urges a , longer stay.
