GERMAN LINER AGROUND

ASSISTANCE REQUIRED ONE WOMAN DROWNED. OSLO, June 20. The German liner Dresden went aground on Bukn Island, was refloated without assistance, then went ashore voluntarily on Karmo Island. The Dresden wirelessed the Bergen that she.had been damaged, and that immediate assistance was required. All the passengers were landed safely, excepting a woman, who was drowned when ,a boat containing 20 women overturned. THE STOKEHOLD FLOODED. OSLO, June 21. The Dresden struck a rock and soon developed a heavy list, the water penetrating three holes in the ship's bottom, flooding the stokehold. A LATER MESSAGE.

FOUR WOMEN DROWNED. LONDON, June 21. (Received June 21, at 8 p.m.) The Dresden death roll is now reported to be four women. All the passengers were German workers from the Saar. The warship Rodney was among the ships that responded to the S.O.S. The Dresden struck while the passengers were having dinner, and heeled over violently. Tables were overturned, and wild panic ensued, and 'the liner was put ashore as soon as the, danger of sinking was realised. Meantime the passengers started- to jump- overboard, and all who jumped were saved. The vessel carried 980 passengers and 360 crew. She was beached near Karmo. It is now thought that she struck a submerged wreck, not a rock. The Norwegian vessel Knog Haakon took the greater part of the passengers, while the remainder landed on the island with little difficulty, and were motored to farms. ■'■ ■ The captain wirelessed that he was the last to leave the ship, which was in a sinking condition. The cruise was arranged for German workers as the principal part of a Government scheme of holidays for workers.
