SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS SECOND EVENT DECIDED SOUTHLAND COMPETITOR SUCCESSFUL. (Fbom Odb Special Reporter.) \ MIDDLEMARCH, June 21. The second event of the South Island Dog Trial Championships was completed on Mr Alexander M'Kinnon's property at Middlemarch to-day, rather misty and unpleasant conditions ruling. At one period In the morning a heavy fog enveloped the hills on which the course was set out, and the runs had to be postponed for half an hour, with the result that it was only at a fairly late hour in the afternoon that the event was concluded. The course was far from easy, and many of the dogs had to contend with sheep which bolted down the steep slope, and winded themselves, being, as a result, difficult to yard. ■Nevertheless, several excellent performances were recorded during. the day, a number of the dogs exhibiting splendid control over the sheep, which were frequently of a fractious and stubborn disP °The° evert, Head, Pull, and Yard, was won by Mr A. T. Miller, of Chfden, with 154* joints, Mr R. M. Wilson, of Canterbury, being second with 149 J points. Then came Mr J. Crutchley, of Kyeburn, with 147 J points, and Mr John Purdue, ot Kaitangata, with 146 point*. The detailed results are as follows: — HEADING, PULL, AND YARDING (about a quarter of a mile). Time, 12 minutes. Points—Outrun 20, lift 3, pull 2, work at yards 7, actual yard 4; total, 54. First prize £ls, second £lO, third £5. fourth £3, fifth £2, sixth. £l. Anderson's Pawn (134 J points) tenth. , Commenting on the performances of the placed dogs, the judges—Messrs H. 8.. Ingram (Canterbury), John Evans, (Southland), and A. Henderson , (Otago) stated that the first dog—Mr Millers Dusky—cast to the right, making a good headjn lmin 25sec. The sheep raced to meet the dog, but it lifted carefully and started pulling in a good line until it. was caught out of position and ran out to the left. Pulling across the flat, the dog was again slightly out of position, and slewed the sheep a trifle oft the line, but the sheep were held firmly at the mouth of the pen until one animal split slightly. The dog yarded in lOmin 30sec—an excellent performance. The second placed dog—Mr R. M. Wilson's Mac—cast to the right and ran a little wide, but made a good head in Imm, 35sec. It lifted carefully, but let the sheep away off the line to the right, and, after bringing them back Jo the line, puiled in a fair line to the pen. After got* work at the yard, it yarded perfectly in Bmin 27sec. ; J. Crutchley's Skip, the third dog, made a wide cast to the right and headed in lmin 50sec. In lifting it let the sheep a little to "the right and pulled fast on a rigzag course, keeping a fair line. The sheep were let a little past the front of the pen, and were yarded firmly in 7min, 50sec <' '-- , ■ -'•.' John .Purdue's Kep, which, gained fourth place, cast to the right and ran out in a good line. It came in a little, but went out and headed in lmin 35sec. It lifted carefully on a good line to the foot of the hill, where it ran off to the left and slewed the sheep off the line on the flat. At the pen the sheep were let out of position, but after much urging the dog recovered and penned in llmin 25sec. The dog was out of position when yarding. The fifth dog, J. Trotter's M*Nab, cast to the left and ran out straight to take a good cast, but came in too soon, heading a little closely in lmin 20sec. It lifted steadily, and pulled in a good line. The sheep split slightly in v the basin, but continued on in a good line to the pen. The dog split, the sheep slightly once, and also let them out of position, yarding in 9min lOsec. ~

The other placed dog, M. A. Matheson's Glen, cast wide to the right and stopped too far behind the sheep, after which it came on and headed in 2min 55sec. It lifted nicely, but pulled rather fast and, let the. sheep a little off the line to the right. It landed at the pen in a good position, then let the sheep out of position slightly, yarding nicely in 11m in lOsec. , The final event of the championships, the Huntaway with Slew, will be held to-mor-row.
