SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

Some important" public buildings in Queenstowu arc rapidly approaching completion. Amongst these is,the new Union Bank of Australia, which was expected to be sufficiently advanced to be opened for the transaction of business on Saturday last. The new Post Office in Ballarat-street is completed, and was opened for business on Friday last. . . . A meeting was held on. Friday evening in the First Presbyterian Church of delegates from the various Sunday Schools of Dunedin, with a view of discussing the desirability of forming a Sunday School Union, as a branch of and in connection with the parent institution of that name in London. There were present teachers from the various schools in connection with the Presbyterian, Wesleyan, Independent, and Baptist Churches; and after the formal constitution of the meeting and full expression of opinion had been elicited the following resolution was adopted unanimously:—"That it is de? sirable to form a Sunday School Union in Dunedin. and that a committee be formed to draw up and submit rules to a future general meeting of teachers, such committee to consist.of one or more from each school of the various denominations." ...

Considerable attention is being given in various parts of Australia to the construction of tramways in lieu of the ordinary macadamised roads, and where railways on the system existing in the more important districts would be too expensive. ...

The Natives north of Auckland have generally been considered staunch adherents of the Government. A large meeting of the Natives was held lately at Mongonui. Many speeches were made by the leading chiefs in favour of neutrality in the event of war in the south, and a general feeling was expressed of a determination to. assist the Governor in putting down rebellion to the Queen's authority if he should think their services required. i The Hawke's Bay Government are abOut to raise a body of 100 men under the Colonial Defence Act. It is proposed to obtain 80 of the men from Otago. . . . Privates are to have 7s 6d a day; corporals, 10s; and sergeants, 12s 6d. But they are to provide everything they require, including a horse and a revolver, and are to keep themselves and their horses. The advertisement states that " the service on which the men are to be employed will keep them chiefly in the country, where abundance of native grass is to be found for their horses, and where the necessaries of life are to be obtained at one-half the price now ruling in Dunedin." The period of service is not to exceed three years; and the Hawke's Bay Government promise, on its completion, "grants of land on the same terms as the military settlers." A steerage passage and a bonus of Ll on landing are also promised.
