THE WOMEN'S INSTITUTE.

The Goodwood Women's Institute met on Wednesday, June 13, Mrs Jennings (president) presiding. The motto was "Don't cultivate a crepe de chine taste on a britway income," and the. roll call "Something I Would Like to Know.'' The competition for 'an - original limerick on the institute was won by Mrs Jennings, with Miss Hancock second and Mrs Hancock third. Mrs Waldren and Mrs Gordon provided the social half-hour and Mrs Dickson and Miss Hancock were the hostesses.

On Thursday evening, June 14, the Waitati Institute entertained the residents at a social gathering to celebrate the fourth birthday of the institute. A varied programme of games, competitions, and dancing wa s carried out. After supper, pro-vided-by the ladies of the district, the birthday cake was carried in and the usual ritual observed; the president lighting the candles, the secretary extinguishing them, and one of the oldest members cutting the cake. The social was much enjoyed by the large crowd present.

The Benhar Institute met on Wednesday, Mrs Twaddle presiding. The motto was "None is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of others." In the competition, " Best sprung humpty," Mrs Harvey was firet and Mrs Murdoch second. After the business part of the evening was finished the meeting took the form of a social, with musical items, games, competitions, and play-acting. The hostesses were Mesdames Williams, Jackson, and Gregory, and Miss Williams.

The Waianakarua ' Institute met on Saturday, Mrs G. Bugden presiding, The motto was "Do it now" - and the roll call "My favourite author and two of his books." Motions of sympathy were passed with Mrs N. Ross and Mrs H. Gibson in their recent bereavements. The competition, "A child's pair of slippers,' was won by Mrs D. Bugden with Mrs 11. MTCerrow second. Hostesses were Mesdames G. Bugden and R. Hutton, the social half-hour being conducted by Mesdames J. Hutton, jun., and R. Willbena.

The Green Island Institute met on Tuesday evening, Mr s W. T. Smellie presiding. A special vote of thanks was accorded Mr A. L. Burk for his assistance in receiving Winter Show exhibits. An address was given by the Rev. Mr Graham, of Mosgiel. The competition, "The best plate of shortbread," was won by Mrs Stewart, with Mrs Mason second. Hostesses were Mesdames W. Miller, Gardiner, Kane, and Herbison, and Miss Kirkland.

The Moeraki Institute met on Wednesday night, Mrs Scully presiding. The motto was " Life is a camera, look pleasant," and the roll call "A breakfast suggestion." The competition, "Anything made from one egg," was won by Mrs Watson, with Mrs Pagel and Miss W. Watson second. A demonstration on posy, wreath, and bouquet making was given by a friend. Hostesses were Mesdames Scully and Pagel.

The Waikouajti Institute met on Wednesday. The motto was " What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity," and the roll call, "If visitors come to dinner 'when meat and pudding are finished what would -you make?" Competition was "Something made from a 701 b sugar bag." Mrs Cleave gained highest for a cushion, and Mrs Simmins and Mrs MTSenzic came second (equal). Mrs Fred Aitcheson gave a demonstration on silk painted embroidered work. Hostesses were: Mesdames Cleave and Tcnneut and Miss Maxwell.

The Roxburgh Institute met on Wednesday. There was on show the work that had been at the Winter Show bay. Mrs Burgess sang a solo, and Miss D. Vernon recited. A competition for eggless cakes was won by Mrs Waters for fruit, and Miss M. Patterson plain. Mrs Waters took second place in each class.

The Palmerston Institute met in the Clark Hall on Thursday. Mrs A. M'Gregor (president) presided. The president expressed the sympathy of the institute with Miss Diack and family in their recent bereavement. The motto was "Find excuses for others, but never for yourself," and the roll call "What our grannies did without." Mesdames Borton and Prentice gave a report of the activities of the Play-reading and Play-acting Circles. Mrs Paget (Moeraki) demonstrated " Humpties made from cheese crates." The competition, " Three pieces of shortbread "was won by Mrs. A. Martin, with Mrs Dennison second and Mrs Park third. Hostesses were Mesdames Rhodes and Watt and Mies Screen.

The Waipiata Institute met on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Hastie and Miss Shep herd presided. The motto was " When you are up to your neck in hot water, be like the kettle 'and sing." Roll call, " Household Hints." Miss Chapman gave a demonstration on "Rug Making." The competition for raffia work was won by Miss Jones. A needle case from scraps was also won by Miss Jones, with Mrs Weir second. Potato peeling blindfolded was won by Mrs Gordon, with Miss Joues second. It was resolved to convey a message of sympathy to a member who was spriously ill. The hostesses were Mrs L. Tregonning and Misses E. and V. Chapman and A. Roberts.

On Tuesday Warepa Institute celebrated its fourth birthday with a party to which members of neighbouring institutes were invited. The president (Mrs Cross) welcomed the guests, and stressed the value of the institutes in forming friendships. Miss Muriel Cross then sang " The Hills of Donegal," this being followed by an amusing competition entitled " A Musical Romance," three members from Waiwera Institute tying for first place. The roll call was answered with a joke or funny story. Tea was then served, and a birthday cake cut, following the usual candle-lighting ceremony. During an interval those present viewed the display of handcrafts which had previously been exhibited in the Dunedin Winter Show. The concluding item was a playettc, " Pink Slippers," the members taking part being Mesdames G. Stewart. Miller, and M'lntosb, and Misses Muriel Cross and Eileen Arson.

The Waitahuna Institute met last Friday. The roll call was " Three most useless things in the house." A home science box on "Rugmaking" was demonstrated by Mrs Brown and Mrs Labes. The president of the Play-reading Circle (Mrs Skinner) read the report of the marks, etc., of the local team which competed at the drama festival at Balclutha. The competition was for the nicest homeknitted en I'd i gan or jumper. Miss A. Webster (Waitahuna West) was first and Miss E. Crump second A debate, " Should Husbands Help in the House? " was held, affirmatives being declared the winners. The hostesses w-ere Mrs Woodley and Mrs and Miss Walker.
