UNIVERSITY TEAMS MEET FAST GAME WON BY A’S University A, by defeating the B team at Logan Park yesterday afternoon by 18 points to 6, took first place with Southern in the senior Rugby football competition. In spite of the fact that the ground was in a sodden condition and a misty rain fell throughout the game, the teams gave a bright display. The. match was played at_ a surprisingly fast pace, and the ball in the circumstances was well handled. The play was by no means onesided, the B team’s forwards playing welj in the loose, but the A team wag always more dangerous near the line. The teams were as follows: University A ’(Light Blue).—Jolly, Jones, Uttley, Watt, Fookes, Page, M'Arthur; forwards —Lopdell, Laney, Macartney, Boyes, Simmers, Chapman, Hamilton, Green. University B (Colours). —MTarland, Maskell, Roy, Stevenson-Wright, Symes, Ryder, Emanuel: forwards—Sincock, Wilson, Anderson, Mack, Maslin, Wall, Borrie, Cuddon.

Simmers, of the A team, was injured immediately after the start and was replaced by Strang. Play began with a scries of loose rushes in which the B team held the upper hand, Stevenson-Wright, playing at wing threequarter for the B’s, finally kicking the ball into touch-in-goal. Watt and Fookes joined in an attractive move for the Blues, but the Colours were soon attacking again. The, Blue forwards, however, carried all before them in a sweeping rush, and, after a scramble following a line out the ball was sent out to Uttley, who steadied himself in front of the posts' and potted a goal. University A 4, University B nil. The Colours appeared to be in danger when Chapman charged down a kick by MTarland, but the B forwards saved the situation by dribbling to halfway. Jolly stopping the rush with a powerful line kick. Then the Blue backs swung into action again. Uttley made a strong run, and although he slipped, he sent out a good pass to Watt, who raced over*and round behind the poets. Jolly converted. University A 9, University B nil. A powerful line kick put the Colours in an attacking position again, and the A team had a busy time on defence until the Blue forwards, led by Green, carried play back to halfway. Another forward rush enabled the Blues to penetrate the B twenty-five, where the Colours began to throw the ball about. Uttley, however, intercepted a pass and seut out to Watt, who scored again. Jolly failed to convert. University A 12, University B nil. The Colours then made a desperate assault on the A line. The ball was kicked across after a forward scramble, aud Stevenson-Wright fell on it to score at the corner. Symes narrowly failed with the shot, at goal. University A 12, Univcrsitv B 3.

Soon after the beginning of the second spell M'Artbur ran from a scrum and “ dummied." When close to the lino be wag taken by M'Farland, but Jones picked up and dived over at the corner. Jolly failed with a difficult shot. University A 15, University 83. A few minutes later Jones made a spectacular run up the wing, but wag held up on the line. After a period of fast play, the A forwards bore down upon the Colours’ line and Lopdell scored, the kick again failing. University A 18, University B 3. The teams maintained a hot pace in a series of rushes in which neither line was threatened until M'Farland put his side on attack with a powerful line kick. The Colours were awarded a penalty in a good position, but Symes failed with the shot at goal. A line kick by Uttley put the Blucg in a good position, and they attacked strongly until Stevenson-Wfight dribbled the ball down the side lino almost to halfway. Following a strong dash by Maskell the Colours were awarded another penalty, and this time Symes wag successful. Even play followed until the final whistle was sounded with the scores: University A ...... IS points. - University B 6 points. Mr J. A. Aitchison was the referee. SOUTH ISLAND TRIAL TEAMS . BUSH BEATS WAIRARAPA (Per United Press Association.) CARTERTON, Juno 20. Bush defeated Wairarapa at Carterton to-day by 8 points to 5. It was evidently Wairarapa’s unlucky day, for it crossed the line seven times in the first spell, either losing the ball or landing in touch in goal. There was no score till late in the second spell, when the Bush backs started a rush which was carried on, Mahoney scoring in a good position. Udy converted. A few minutes later Booth was caught offside under the goal and Udy again kicked a goal. With 10 minutes to go a brilliant back movement by Wairarapa saw Booth score at the corner and dodge bis way to the goal posts, Fitzgerald converted, Mr H, J. M'Kenzie was referee.

WELLINGTON DEFEATS TARANAKI

(Per United Press Association.) HAWERA, June -0.
