Professor Jack wrote to the meeting of the Otago University Council yesterday stating that that morning Walter Rodgerson had passed away at the Dunedin Hospital.. “ Walter Rodgerson/ stated Professor Jack, “ was an excellent student, and had a fine character. He was a dux of the Otago Boys’ High behoof and gained a junior university scholarship. Last year he took physics (stage II) and was easily first for New Zealand. This year he was a student demonstrator and was taking stage 111 physics. I had great hopes for his future, since he combined a good brain with excellent experimental ability. The department and the University have to mourn the loss of one who would have brought credit to the name of the University, and would have added something of importance to scientific development.” The letter was read to the council by the chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell), who said he was sure members would join with him in deeply deploring the loss of such a young and promising lad, and that they would extend their sympathy to his relatives. He added that he had, held the position' of chairman for 23 years, and it was with deep regret that he had decided to relinquish the office. During those 23 years there had never been any friction between himself and the members of the board, and they had always worked harmoniously together.
