PORT CHALMERS— Juke 19th. The ship outside the Heads on Thursday proved to be the Earl of Windsor with a freight of sheep from Napier. She was towed up iu the forenoon, after an eight days’ passage to the Heads, with a load of about 350 head out of 3,000 wethers shipped at Napier. The brigantine Cecilia, from the Chatham Island, passed up in the afternoon. . . . She brings about 35 tons of potatoes, and 58 pigs, having lost some during the heavy weather experienced. The steamer Success had arrived at the Chathams, reporting similar weather, and with the loss of her jib-boom. , , ■

Society be formed, to be called the Horticultural Society of Otago.” “That the leading objects of the Society shall be to collect and diffuse knowledge on Horticultural subjects, with a view to the improvement of cultivation and the development of the resources of the Proviube by holding Exhibitions; by holding monthly meetings at which Essays may be read and .discussed; and by affording opportunities for the exhibition of useful, new, rare, or interesting plants, fruits, flowers, and other things connected with horticulture,” “That the Society shall consist of a President, Vice * President, Treasurer, Secretary, twelve members of committee, and ordinary, and corresponding members.” “That the subscription to the Society shall be ten shillings annually.” “That the committee shall consist of eight practical gardeners and four amateurs.” Messrs Matthews, Clarkson, Anderson, Pryer, and Begg were appointed a committee to draw up the rules and carry out the resolutions. In reference to the successful attack of'General Cameron upon the rebel position, the Auckland Southern Cross says:— "The effect of this news upon the natives in Auckland was remarkable. They were seen conversing in an excited manner, and evidently aid not like the result of the first conflict. To the European population it wa s different. They look upon this as the beginning of the end. Every one reposes confidence in the ability and bravery of the General in command; and now that be is alone at the seat of war, we expect before long to hear the news even more decisive than ever.” The same journal speaks of the re-establishment of commercial confidence to an extent that had been unknown for a long time past, as a gratifying and reassuring result of the defeat of the rebels. ' The Press reports that a meeting of ladies has been held in Christchurch to promote the establishment of a Home for Single Women. ...
