MR C. M. GILRAY

RESIGNATION FROM UNIVERSITY COUNCIL VALUABLE SERVICE RENDERED. Mr C. M, Gilray forwarded his resignation as a member of the University Council to the meeting held yesterday afternoon, the resignation to date from the close of the meeting. Tlie chancellor (Mr Morrell) said be was sure they were all very sorry to receive the resignation. Air Gilray would leave Dunedin on June 26. He had been a valued member of their council, on which he had served for nine years. His value to the council had increased as time had gone on. The name of Gilray would long be held in honour in their university. Mr Gilray was the son of one of their most esteemed and popular professors and he was himself one of their most distinguished students. Air Morrell then moved as follows: —" “That the council place on record its sense of the valuable service rendered to the University by Air C. AI. Gilray, AI.C., AI.A., Oxou. and N.Z., during bis nine years of membership (1925-1034) as a representative of the District Court of Convocation. Air Gilvay’a distinguished record in this University and at Oxford, his interest in all sides of university life, .and his experience in educational work as a teacher and headmaster, have given weight to his opinions on the business coming before the council. His unfailing courtesy and geniality coupled with good judgment and force of character have secured the respect and liking of all his fellow-members. They, part with him with very great regret, but with the heartiest wishes for his health, happiness and success iu the very responsible position he is now taking up as principal of the Scotch College, Alelbourue.'’—(Applauee.i Sir James Allen said he would like to endorse what the chancellor had said m respect to Air Colin Gilray, and to express his own personal regret at losing him from their council meetings. Mr Gilray, he was sure, would take with him to his new post a good deal he bad learnt from his experience at Oxford and a great deal more from his life in New Zealand. —(Applause.) He trusted that that would be of # value to him in his new work. He wished him every success in his new appointment.—(Applause.) Mr Gilray, who was received with applause, said he desired to thank them tor the kind things they had said about him. It had been a great pleasure for him to come back, after being away from the Dominion for some years, and to have the opportunity and the privilege of representing the District Court of Convocation on the council. He was sure that the general public appreciated the work of the council more than members perhaps realised, and he certainly had learnt a great deal since he had come on the council, although be had not often taken part in the debates, because he was not a man who spoke very much, as they knew. Air Gilray said he would have very pleasant memories of the council. He regretted to leave New Zealand, and both his wife and himself would leave Dunedin with some sadness. They would never forget the overwhelming kindness shown them by the people of Dunedin.—(Applause.)
