MUSEUM EXTENSION

HANDSOME MONETARY GIFT AN ANONYMOUS DONOR Mr W. J. Morrell, chancellor of the Otago University, stated at the meeting of the University Council yesterday that it had been reported to the Management Committee of the Museum that an anonymous donor had expressed his intention of presenting to the University 400 Bank of New Zealand shares of all approximate value of £2 10s each for the purpose of initiating a fund to provide for Museum extension. The committee, said Mr Morrell, desired to express its warm and sincere thanks to the donor for his generosity, and had resolved to recommend to the council that the fund accumulate for ten years until it would be used for building extension. If, however, special circumstances arose, portion of the fund might be spent before the expiry of ten. years, but only if a recommendation to this effect was made by a majority of not less than twothirds of the Committee of Management of the Museum. It had been further resolved that the income of the fund be invested from time to time by the council after consultation with the chairman of the Management Committee, Later on Mr Morrell said he was very pleased to have tb inform the council that the donor had increased his gift to 'SOO shares.—(Applause.)
