A CUP A DAY: HOT MILK AT MAORI HILL SCHOOL.

The Maori Hill School Committee has set a commendable example in its institution yesterday morning 6f a scheme for the daily distribution of hot milk to the children. The milk is supplied by the committee free of charge to the primers, with 54 children, and Standard I, with 22 children* making a total of five gallons a day for the lower school, for which the committee pays 25s a week. Another five gallons is supplied for the remainder of the children, in Standards II to VI, numbering 80, and a weekly charge of 'fourpence per head is made for this milk. Although the distribution yesterday was made in the playground, it will in future be made in the class rooms at 10.30 each morning by the teachers, assisted by some of the bigger girls. The time occupied will be only about five minutes. In accordance with an instruction from the Health Department the children must take their mugs home every night to be scalded. Should the scheme prove a success it will be carried on all the year round. Whereas some parents have experienced difficulty in persuading their children to drink milk at home, the novelty of the school distribution has evidently made a universal appeal to the children, as there were no refusals yesterday. Children having their lunch at school are already supplied with a cup of hot cocoa.
