ANTARCTIC COLD

SEVENTY-TWO DEGREES BELOW PREPARATIONS AT LITTLE AMERICA. MONTREAL, June 9. (Received June 10, at 8 p.m.) A radio message from, Little America states that the May temperature records show, despite a protracted warm spell, that the mean temperature was 19.2 deg. below zero. In May, 1929, when the first Byrd expedition went south, it was 22,6, and in May} 1911, at the time of Amundsen’s expedition, it was 31.7. The lowest temperature then was 62deg. below zero, on May 11. Admiral Byrd’s records for March 25 to May 31 show a minimum temperature of 72.5 deg. below zero at the Bolling advance weather base. Preparations for the spring programme of scientific explorations are in full swing at Little America. Although the blizzard outside has piled a vast drift over the base, inside the buildings underneath the tractors are being overhauled, dog team harness and trail gear equipment are being repaired, radio sets for trail parties are being made, and other scientific equipment is being made ready.
