According to a London journal there was recently celebrated in Loudon the anniversary of the granting to Messrs Thomas De La Rue of a royal patcut from William IV to print playing cards in 'England. Mr John Drinkwatcr, in proposing the toast of the firm, recalled that during the American Civil War the rebel States found difficulty in getting any firm to print stamps for them. They sent spies to England and eventually Messrs De La Rue were persuaded to print them. Some of the stamps reached their destination and the Southern States were thus enabled _to carry on the important social service. One of the managing directors, in responding, said that Mr Drinkwater had omitted to mention the important fact that the firm had not yet been paid for those stamps. The suggestion was made that the' sum owing, at compound interest, would go far to offset Great Britain's present debt to the United States.
