VIOLENT EXPLOSION
BOILER BURSTS IN SYDNEY SEVEN PEOPLE INJURED. SYDNEY, May 23. (Received May 24, at 0.5 a.m.) Five men and two women were injured this afternoon by a violent explosion when a boiler burst in research laboratories in the city. Many windows were broken .and buildings shaken. The explosion occurred in the basement during a demonstration of dry cleaning. About eight persons were present, and all were, thrown down. The lights were extinguished and the room was filled with suffocating fumes. < The women screamed hysterically and the men groped through the darkness calling for help. The fire brigade, which was soon on the scene, rendered first aid with oxygen respirators. The women recovered, but three men were sent to hospital suffering from injuries to the face apd eyes. The worst sufferer was Henry Drake, aged 30, a chemist, who suffered a broken leg while hurriedly escaping.
