DUTCH EAST INDIES
LIMITED TRADE POSSIBILITIES. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, May 23. The difficulties in the way of trade expansion between New Zealand and the Dutch East Indies were pointed out by Mr D. Lammers, Sydney agent for the Royal Packet Navigation Company, an important Dutch line, who arrived at ' Auckland by the Wanganella to-day on ' holiday. Royal Packet vessels maintain i a monthly service between Australia, the East Indies, and Singapore. Mr Lammers said that trade at present between Australia and Java was most satisfactory, with indications of a marked improvement if the depression lifted in the ever, that there was only a limited market in Java and other Eastern countries for such products as butter and frozen meat, and if New Zealand entered that trade she would have to compete with Australia. There was little hope of a direct steamer service between New Zealand and Java. Already there was marked competition in the Australian exporting field. Western Australia ,was making a determined effort to capture a larger share of the Eastern market, and it had the advantage, of being much closer to Java than the eastern Australian States.
