There seems no prospect of the return of the penny post in Britain \fhis year. But a National Committee for the* Restoration of the enny Post has been formed, and about 60 of the principal trade organisations are co-operating in a campaign to secure the reform. The committee represents a membership of 25,000 firms, whose total capital is over a thousand millions sterling. The movement in favour of reducing postal charges has. a very substantial backing, and is a much more serious effort to secure the change than any that has previously been made. During the past five years the total surplus made by the Post Ofßce has been over £50.000,000, and last year's figure was in excess of £11,000,000, so, there is no doubt that the service could afford tba reduced charges.
