What the archaeologist owes to the aeroplane is aptly illustrated by the recent discovery of an old Roman road running from London to Lewes. This road, believed to be the'route along which the iron ingots of the Sussex Weald industry were conveyed to the capital for export to the Continent, is the first addition for 200 years to the group of known Roman highways converging on London. The clue to the existence of the road arose from an unusual feature in an aerial photograph taken over Ashdown Forest. Two parallel lines were observed running side by side across the picture. On investigation, the parallel lines, all but indistinguishable on the ground, proved to be buried ditches marking the boundaries of the lost Roman track. Nowadays all airmen engaged in survey work are instructed to maintain a sharp look-out for curious markings or alignments on the ground under survey. This vigilance has led in the past to the discovery of a complex earthworks, belonging to the Iron Age. on Walton Common, Somerset, and another ancient site at Dalks Law Hill, St. Abbs' Head, the nature of which is not fully determined.
